Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking about adding a koi pond, waterfall, or water garden to your backyard? Here are honest answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners across San Diego, Riverside, and Orange Counties. Don’t see your question here? Contact us — we’re happy to talk it through.
How much does a koi pond or waterfall cost?
Every project is different, but most of our residential water features range from a few thousand dollars for a simple pondless waterfall to well over $100,000 for a large-scale koi pond or full backyard transformation. During your free consultation, we’ll talk through your goals and space and give you a realistic range before any design work begins — so there are no surprises.
Do you offer financing?
We can discuss options during your consultation. Reach out and we’ll walk you through what’s available.
Is a koi pond or waterfall a good investment for my home?
Beyond the daily enjoyment, a well-built water feature is a genuine backyard upgrade that enhances outdoor living space — one of the features today’s homebuyers consistently look for in upscale Southern California homes.
Are koi ponds and waterfalls hard to maintain?
Not when they’re built correctly. Our ecosystem-based approach uses proper filtration, plant balance, and construction techniques to keep water naturally clear with minimal ongoing effort. We also offer seasonal maintenance plans if you’d rather leave the upkeep to us entirely.
Will a pond or waterfall waste a lot of water?
No — our systems recirculate water continuously rather than draining and refilling, and pondless waterfalls in particular use very little water since there’s no open surface for evaporation. Automatic fill systems top off only what’s naturally lost, and surrounding plantings can be selected to complement California’s water-conscious landscaping practices.
What happens if I go on vacation?
A properly designed system with automatic fill and quality filtration runs on its own with minimal attention. For extended trips, our maintenance plans can include check-ins.
Won't a pond attract mosquitoes?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and the good news is a well-designed pond actually helps control mosquitoes rather than attract them. Moving water (from waterfalls, fountains, and circulation systems) disrupts the still water mosquitoes need to breed, and koi actively eat mosquito larvae. The ponds most likely to have mosquito problems are stagnant, poorly maintained water — which is exactly what proper design and construction prevents.
Will raccoons or other animals bother my koi?
Predator concerns are common in Southern California. We can design ponds with adequate depth, hiding structures, and other features that make it much harder for predators to reach your fish.
Is a pond safe if I have young children or pets?
Safety is something we discuss with every family during the design process. If safety is a top priority, a pondless waterfall eliminates standing water entirely while still giving you the sound and beauty of moving water. For ponds, we can incorporate design elements suited to your family’s needs — this is exactly the kind of thing to raise during your free consultation.
How long does installation take?
Timelines vary by project size and complexity — a pondless waterfall might take a matter of days, while a large koi pond or full backyard water feature can take several weeks. We’ll give you a specific timeline estimate as part of your design consultation.
Will construction disrupt my whole yard?
We work carefully to minimize disruption to the rest of your landscape and will walk you through exactly what to expect before work begins, so there are no surprises once construction starts.
Do you handle everything from design through construction?
Yes — Waterscape Creations is a turnkey design-build company. We handle design, construction, and installation as one coordinated process, and we’re also available afterward for maintenance and repairs.
